If there’s one thing you should know about me, you should know I love lists. To-do lists in particular are my favorite. So, it’s been quite unsettling that I’ve had “create a substack” on my to-do list for almost a year and have yet to do it. There’s always been an excuse— “nobody wants to hear what I have to say…” “everyone has a substack now…” “I have another blog that I barely write in anymore, what’s the point?” Etc, etc. When you tend to overthink, you can find an excuse for just about anything. I thought when I went on hiatus, I’d finally have enough gas in the metaphorical tank to create one, but hiatus came and went (and wasn’t much of one anyway.) And then… the strike hit. Surely I couldn’t create a substack in the middle of a strike, could I?
Turns out, I could. It took 2 months into the strike, creating (and running) an impromptu mutual aid fund, joining a writers’ group with my former room, and going on vacation was just the shove I needed. So, here we are. Welcome! I’m so happy you’re here.
What can you expect from this? Honestly, I’m not sure. There will be posts on Fridays. I might play around with the podcast part. There will probably be recipes at some point. But, I miss writing in this way and I miss connecting with people by sharing my thoughts and feelings. There will be lots of thoughts and feelings, that I can promise.
During the first couple weeks of the strike (which feels like a lifetime ago at this point), a familiar stranger came up to me and introduced himself. He was familiar because we followed each other on twitter, but a stranger because we had never met in person. He told me how much my blog had meant to him; how much he appreciated the rawness and authenticity of my writing. I’ve thought about that interaction a lot, especially as I prepare to put my feelings online once again.
One thing that has changed since the last time I started a blog, though: I know my worth. There will be free posts, but I do hope you consider subscribing as it will help with the whole “not having an income” thing right now.
See you next Friday…
