The month of May is confounding to me. There’s an eagerness to the energy of the month— a desperation to cross from spring to summer. You can feel it whenever the sunlight returns, and everyone’s malaise lifts. Or when the foggy days make banal moments seem unbearable; you yourself feel as though you’re moving through the dense fog.
That’s not to mention the 1001 spirit days, school events (in the middle of day, which is *so* convenient for working parents), holidays, homework assignments— and that’s just for the parents. Or the scramble to get staffed on a show, finish the pilot sample, or submit to fellowships— for the writers. Either way you slice it, May just seems to carry more stress.
But May also has beautiful moments: the flowers blooming, the smell of jasmine in the air, the perfect 72 degree day with a slight breeze, the anticipation of summer plans… you get the drift.
I had a tough day yesterday— one of those days that I will remember for the rest of my life. But I also cried to my close girlfriends, leaned into my support system, and arranged bouquets so I had something beautiful to distract me. In the midst of the chaotic energy, we’re reminded to slow down and appreciate the beauty surrounding us.
Maybe that’s what May should be about… surrendering to the chaos, while allowing the beauty of the season to lift our spirits, even temporarily.
Here’s a few ideas:
Pick wildflowers on a walk
Arrange bouquets
Make fresh lemonade
Go for a walk
Have a picnic lunch / tea party
Visit a local garden or arboretum
Adopt caterpillars to raise
Plan a summer trip to someplace you’ve never been
Tend to your garden (physical and emotional)
Try a new haircut
Search for the perfect dress/jumpsuit/outfit for summer days
Make a summer bucket list
Visit farmer’s market
Mother’s Day plans
Press flowers into bookmarks
Take a nap in the sun
Paint with watercolors
Fly a kite
However way you wish to spend your May, I hope the magic of the month find its’ way to you 💗
