While L.A. burns...
resources, thoughts, and self-care tips amidst the devastation and heartbreak from the wildfires
Last Tuesday around this time I was laying in bed with a nasty migraine as the winds wreaked havoc outside my window in Burbank. By that evening, L.A. had been transformed into a fiery inferno of destruction, heartbreak, and continuing anxiety.
I’ve grown up in L.A.— this is my hometown and my identity. I grew up in Agoura Hills and was no stranger to fire warnings and evacuations. I’ve known people who have lost their homes because of fires. I knew someone from High School who lost their home just a few months ago. But, I’ve never seen anything like this.
Almost everyone I know in Los Angeles knows at least one person who has lost everything. The economic disparity is already overwhelming in terms of the response. and recovery, but what’s worse, we’re not out of the woods yet. As I’m writing this, the news is on in the background with scary maps showing the majority of my family being in a high-winds area. I feel like we’ve all been collectively holding our breaths for the past week as we try to manage the gamut of emotions.
=I’ve been struggling to write this post since Saturday. Much like my beautiful city of contradictions, there feels like there’s so much to say, but words also don’t feel enough right now. Like many, I’ve also been vacillating between extreme diligence and drive to volunteer, organize, do good, continue with “business as usual”, with wanting to hide under the pillows until everything goes away. For anyone else feeling this way: just do your best. This is not normal. Our reactions don’t need to be either.
My heart breaks for my city and all those who lost so much. I also just want to remind everyone that the recovery is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. I’m so inspired by all the heartening mutual aid taking place across the city right now, and as I continue to work with organizations and local officials, I’ll continue to update with resources and support. My inbox is always open ❤️
Resources for Entertainment Workers
For those of us in entertainment, I’m grateful to all my wonderful friends who have put together lists of resources. Here’s some that I’ve found the most comprehensive and helpful for those of us in a position to help:
Hardship Resources for Entertainment Workers - My beautiful friend Victoria Pollock and the amazing WGA Strike Unite have gathered a comprehensive list of resources.
Humanitas List of Writer Fundraisers - The incredible team at Humanitas has put together this list of GoFundMe’s that are specific to writers. They are also continuing their wonderful Groceries for Writers Program.
Fundraisers for Hollywood Crew Members Affected by LA Fires - My inspirational buddy Liz Alper put together this fundraiser list for all crew members who have been affected. *Please note: this is for ALL crew members, including support staff and agency/rep assistants.
Also, I know this is a bummer to say: but now is not the time to check in about projects or job opportunities. I know so many of us are hurting and feeling the anxiety of “what’s next?” after battling that same anxiety for five years, but READ THE ROOM, BRO!
Grounding Technique (and it’s great for kids!)
My heart is also breaking for our kiddos who are having to process so much right now. If you have an anxious child like I do, I really recommend utilizing some grounding exercises right now.
5-4-3-2-1 is one of my favorite techniques, and here’s a great overview.
Stay safe, everyone. Please reach out if you need resources or community.
